Hard Drive Recovery Solution

The Story: My hard disk DeskStar Model HDT22516DLAT80 with Formatted Mac has stopped to run. Because BIOS hasn’t detected the hard drive and it was not warm I appreciated that the logic board is failed. I have bought a refurbished hard disk identically (same model, FRU, MLC, LBA and same CHS naturally). I replaced the logic board of my old hard disk with the board of the refurbished hard disk. Now I seeing the old hard disk is warm (normally, not hot) I hear the head to Power ON and I feel the disk are spinning, but the BIOS does not detect the hard disk.

Your data now seems LOST !!!

  • step 1: Locate an identical Hitachi hard drive model HDT22516DLAT80 for parts.
  • step 2: Swap the PCB Controller. If the drive is not recognized by the computer,

    - you will need to swap the U7 flash memory chip M25P05 (512 Kbit, Low Voltage, Serial Flash Memory).

    - this chip is usually still good even though the PCB Controller is fried.
    - The chip is only 8 pins and should be easy enough to replace. It contains the Boot Program for the hard drive.
    - Be careful with this chip, if you break it, you're screwed.
  • step 3: NOTE: I like HDCLONE from Data Recovery Labs, it works well for cloning hard drives with bad sectors
  • step 4: Once you have cloned as much of the drive as possible, you should be able to retrieve your data.
-Making a second clone is more effort but will protect your data should something go wrong during the Recovery process.
-Note: don't forget to restore the jumpers back for correct Master and Slave functionality.
