Configuration: Standard
Desktop computer with 1 Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST3160023AS P/N 9W2814-133.
OS / File System: Windows
XP Professionnal. NTFS.
Failure: Un-expected
and sudden head crash, complete hard drive failure.
Hard Drive Recovery Procedure
- step 1: You
must locate the identical hard drive for parts: Seagate Barracuda 7200.7
ST3160023AS P/N: 9W2814-13 Firmware: 8.12 HDA P/N: 100334816
- step 2: Swap
the heads in a Class 100 clean room or equivalent.
- step 3: Choose
a destination hard drive of the same or greater capacity.
- step 4: Connect
source and destination hard drives.
- step 5: Using
COPYHD.exe from Data Recovery, inc. start cloning the source hard drive.
- step 6: If
you should hit a bad spot (too many bad sector(s)) just jump 10,000
sector(s) or so to clear the bad sector area. Note that the MFT (Master
File Table) is located around sector 6,300,000 and effort should be
made to clone as much of that area as possible.
- step 7: Once
you have cloned the entire hard drive, make a duplicate of the cloned
hard drive for safe keeping. If you have little or no bad sector(s),
you might be able to boot the clone.
- step 8: Run
any data
recovery software for NTFS and recover as many files as possible.
- step 9: Copy
all files to an external hard drive and you're done.
