Configuration: Dell
Desktop computer, Pentium 4, 500 Meg RAM, Western Digital Caviar AC23200-75LC
hard drive.
OS / Filesystem: Novell
4.11, NFS
Failure: Bad
Heads, clicking hard drive, not drive ready.
Data Recovery procedure
- step 1: Find
yourself an identical hard drive for parts. The hard drive must match
exactely, MDL:AC23200-75LC and DCM:BRABRRCA0ACG, a close date code would
be good also for good mesure (16 APR 98).
- step 2: A
proper clean room will be required for the next steps.
- step 3:
Minimum tools: WIHA
torx screwdriver set, surgical quality tweezers, a precise X-Acto
knife and a decent set of high quality needle nose pliers, and a
hammer.
- step 4:
Dust off the drives removing as much excess dust and dirt as possible
so as to not contaminate the clean room
- step 5: Remove
the seal on the side of the drive and all screws including the screw
under the label, remove the hard drive cover.
- step 6: Using
the drive case as leverage, remove the hard drive magnet with the needle
nose pliers.
- step 7: Remove
the plastic head travel stopper.
- step 8: Rotate
the platters slightly while sliding the heads off the platter surface.
- step 9: Remove
and replace the head assembly. Reverse all steps to re-assemble the
hard drive.
- step 10: Almost
done, clone the hard drive to a suitable destination hard drive equal
or greater in capacity ignoring all bad sector(s), use COPYHD.exe from
Data Recovery, inc..
- step 11:
If there are too many bad sector(s) you will want to run some data
recovery software to recover your files otherwise you should be
able to just boot the cloned hard drive.
