System Configuraturation:
IBM Thinkpad with an IBM Travelstar IC25N040ATCS04-0 P/N:08K1089 MLC:
H32687 laptop hard drive
OS / File System: Windows
XP Professional
Failure: Head
Crash, dead head channel.
Data Recovery Procedure
- step 1: Find
an identical IBM Travelstar IC25N040ATCS04-0 P/N:08K1089 MLC: H32687,
you will need an identical set of heads for replacement.
- step 2: You
will need to perform the head swap in a Class 100 Clean room or equivalent.
- step 3: You
must be careful when changing the head assembly not to let the heads
slip onto the platter surfaces. They will get stuck to the platter surface
and will be very difficult to free once stuck. You might break a head.
- step 4: Once
you have sucessfully swaped the heads, you are ready to start cloning
the drive using COPYHD.exe
from Data Recovery, inc.
- step 5: Keep
in mind that the MFT (Master File Table) starts around sector 6,200,000
and sector 6,500,000. In order to have a clean recovery, you should
try to clone as much of this area as possible.
- step 6: Start
cloning from the begining of the hard drive until you reach a bad sector
area when the hard drive cloning will get stuck, jump 10,000 sector(s)
and keep track of the starting bad sector for future referance.
- step 7: If
you hit a serious bad sector area, jump to the end of the drive and
start reverse cloning.
- step 8: Jump
as many times as necessary to clone as much of the hard drive as possible.
- step 9: Once
you have completed cloning the original hard drive, make a second copy
of the clone for redundentcy.
- step 10:
Run data recovery software on the clone to recovery as much of your
data as possible and copy the recovered files to a Westerrn Digital
Passport external USB hard Drive.
