Hard Drive Recovery Procedure

  • step 1: Find an identical drive for parts, Model number WD1200JB-00EVA0 and DCM: HSBHNTJCT must match or the heads wont work.
  • step 2: The heads are dead, the hard drive probably has micro scratches.
  • step 3: The following must be done in a Class 100 Clean Room environment.
  • step 4: Replace the Head Stack assembly.
  • step 5: Clone the drive with COPYHD.exe from Data Recovery, inc.
  • step 6: Start cloning from sector 0 until you reach the first set of Bad Sector(s).
  • step 7: Sector 95 and us is important, it contains the FAT (File Allocation Table)
  • step 8: Keep track of the location of the bad sector areas, skipping 100,000 sectors or so to avoid damaged areas. Scratches could kill the heads.
  • step 9: When you complete the initial cloning process, make a copy of the cloned drive for safe keeping (the original drive could die anytime).
  • step 10: Run Data Recovery Software on the clone and recover as much data as you can.
  • step 11: Copy all files to an external Western Digital Passport USB hard drive.
