Configuration: Single drive Seagate ST380011A Barracuda 7200.7 80GB PATA

OS: Windows 2000 Professional formatted NTFS.

Failure: Many bad sector(s) with firmware 8.16 errors


Hard Drive Recovery procedures

  • step 1: Locate an identical Seagate ST280011A, HDA P/N 100316760, Firmware 8.16
  • step 2: Using COPYHD.exe from Data Recovery,inc. Clone as much of the drive as possible. It is possible to repair damaged firmware using the firmware from an identical drive with HD Repair for Seagate from Salvation Data. Repairing firmware should only be attempted if the Seagate hard drive is not recognized by the system BIOS.

You may need to replace the heads and PCB to get the drive to a "Drive Ready" state

  • step 3: Because of many bad sector(s) you will need to recover the data using GetDataBack
  • step 4: Transfer the data to a Westernal Digital Passport external USB drive.
