Head Crash Maxtor 6Y200P0

return to: Hard Drive Recovery

This is an example of a Head Crash.

In this example, the Maxtor 200Gb SATA drive (Mdl: 6Y200P0) failed to shut itself down after an initial failure.
The drive started clicking while trying to seek the servo track and reinitialize after reading a bad sector.
The failure started sometime the night and was not noticed until morning. At that time the drive had a severe scratch over 75% of the surface of the platters.
The usual method for minor (hairline) scratches is to replace the "Head Stack Assembly" and attempt usually to read the drive one last time, however in this case, the scratches are too severe.
After instaling the new heads, the new heads died immediately when landing over the scrached area which has turned into an abrasive surface (sandpaper effect)
This drive is un-recoverable.
